Louisiana became the 18th state in 1812. It is the only state that has parishes instead of
counties. The region has basically two different land types, the uplands and the swamp regions.
The uplands are made up of woodlands and prairies. The climate is considered humid subtropical which
is hot and humid in the summer and mild short winters and is vulnerable to hurricanes.
